What Happens in a Couples Therapy Session?

A couples therapy session typically lasts 50–60 minutes and follows a structured format: a check-in on the week, a revisit of homework, a focused conversation on one key issue, and a closing skill or takeaway to practice before next time. Sessions are not free-form arguments — a trained therapist actively shapes the conversation, intervenes when patterns become destructive, and keeps both partners engaged.
